KAREN LOUISE COPELAND

Karen has over seven years experience in the leisure and lifestyle management area, gaining comprehensive nationally recognised qualifications in the period 1994-95. She held management roles for a leading UK hotel chain in their specialist health and fitness facilities from 1997 until injury required her to refocus her own lifestyle. After a period out to care for her family and reorientate herself, she has now launched an exercise and fitness consultancy specialising in back pain prevention, risk assessment and management, Phoenix Fit for Purpose. Her own particular research domain is citizen empowerment and injury prevention strategies. She works with various self-help groups like Arthritis Care and Back Care, has published on the web and written for national and international initiatives on citizens issues, including NHS Direct Online.

She also uses her business skills in the SME, Phoenix Associates, carrying out duties including accounts management, web and manual research support. Additionally she has had involvement in the health informatics arena since 1990 when she was involved in the Medical Informatics Europe congress and the design of the logo for the annual national HC event. She now provides service to the world triennial health informatics medinfo2001 congress Organising Committee in the areas of merchandising, advertising and database input
