The Centre for Health Informatics Research and Development (CHIRAD) research team have been attempting to build a mapping of the discipline of Health Informatics. The team recognised the valuable work undertaken by previous workers in the field and also realised the enormity of the task they were facing and so focused in the first instance on the cognitive mapping exercise which is the focus of this paper.

The Education Steps think-tank meeting of 2005 in Otley, was the first stage of this project initiated by the Health Informatics Forum (HIF) of the British Computer Society (BCS) and conducted by the CHIRAD.
